Panel Discussion: Is High Speed Rail delivering on its promise of improving society?

09:45 - 10:50

More and more high-speed rail projects are being given the green light across the world. With such large investments at stake, the industry must ask itself if high speed rail will deliver on its promise to improve the lives of citizens. Will HSR develop economies and cities, spreading prosperity to new regions? Will it truly reduce pollution and traffic congestion? Will it create jobs? Will it bring people closer together and create a forward-looking society ready for the future?

11.35
How to increase the attractiveness of rail for customers?

11.35-11.50

The competition on the rail passenger as well as on the rail freight market promises to provide customers with the expected benefits: higher level of service for lower price. This is however only possible when – besides the sector internal innovation – the framework legislative conditions are set accordingly, allowing not only fair intramodal competitive environment but also ensuring the correct intermodal level playing field. Alongside with the implementation of the 4. Railway Package the sector expects the elements of the “Europe on the move” initiative to contribute to it, together with the further boost of the rail infrastructure investments as a part of the MFF.
